Veana Therapeutics Inc. (Veana) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of a novel pill designed to target cancer cells, while sparing normal cells. They are currently examining the use in a clinical trial of women with intractable breast cancer. Their lead compound, VT-101, is a novel oral small molecule that works by destabilizing mitochondria (the powerhouse of cells), thereby inducing both apoptotic and immunogenic cell death – potentially killing cancer cells in a selective manner. In a Phase 1 clinical trial involving 17 patients with Stage III-IV cancer, VT-101 demonstrated an acceptable safety profile. It is currently being evaluated in an ongoing dose-escalation Phase 1b trial for metastatic HER2+ breast cancer patients who have not responded to existing treatments. Preliminary data have shown promising clinical results.

Veana is planning further investigations into the potential of their compound in treating triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Additionally, they are exploring the possibility of its application in other types of cancer.

WHY WE INVESTED

Early data, during safety studies, showed that the Veana pill may stabilize the disease in advanced cancer patients for 8 -26 months with a manageable safety profile. Destabilizing the mitochondria in cancer is a novel approach and Veana’s oral medicines may offer a new treatment for previously untreatable cancers.
